How to look after Strawberry Elsanta (Fragaria x ananassa) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position for the sweetest, juiciest fruit. Elsanta is a reliable, disease-resistant summer-fruiting strawberry with large, shiny fruit. It suits raised beds, vegetable plots, hanging baskets, grow bags and containers. Space the 12 plants about 30-45cm apart, with 75cm between rows.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with well-rotted compost. Plant with the crown at soil level, never buried. Water regularly, particularly while the fruit is developing, and water at the base to keep the fruit dry. Mulch with straw around the plants once the fruit begins to form to keep berries clean, retain moisture and deter slugs.

Feeding:
Feed with a high-potash fertiliser, such as tomato feed, every 10-14 days from flowering until the end of fruiting. Container plants need regular feeding and watering.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Remove runners if you want plants to put energy into fruit, or peg a few into pots to make new plants. After fruiting, cut off old leaves and tidy plants, taking care not to cut into the crown. Net against birds as the fruit ripens. Strawberry plants crop best for about three years, so replace a third of your plants each year from runners to keep yields high.

Common Problems:
- Grey mould (botrytis): Furry grey growth on fruit. Keep fruit off damp soil, remove affected berries and improve air circulation.
- Slugs and snails: Protect with straw mulch and wildlife-friendly controls.
- Birds: Net the plants as fruit ripens.
- Small fruit: Often caused by dry soil, overcrowding or old plants. Water regularly and renew plants every three years.
- Vine weevil: Wilting plants with chewed roots, especially in pots. Check roots and consider biological controls.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.

🪴 What Does Bare Root Mean?

Our plants have their full root systems but are carefully removed from the pot and soil before delivery. The roots are wrapped in moist material and eco-friendly packaging to keep them fresh during transit. It's less messy, reduces waste, and allows the plant to settle into your garden more easily once planted.
