How to look after Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, sheltered position. Sweet marjoram is a fragrant herb similar to oregano, but sweeter and milder, with soft, grey-green leaves and small white knot-like flowers in summer that bees love. It is a tender perennial, usually grown as an annual in the UK, and suits herb gardens, sunny borders and pots near the kitchen door. Plant out only once frosts have passed.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in light, well-drained, moderately fertile soil, or in pots with gritty compost. Water regularly after planting until established, then allow the soil to dry between waterings. Marjoram dislikes wet, heavy soil, particularly in cool weather.

Feeding:
No feeding is needed in the ground. Container plants can be given a weak liquid feed once or twice in summer. Rich feeding produces soft growth with less flavour.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Pinch out growing tips and pick leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. Pick before the flowers open for the best flavour, although you can also use the flowers. Cut back plants by about a third after flowering to encourage a fresh flush of leaves. Marjoram is frost tender, so bring pots into a bright, frost-free place for winter or take cuttings in late summer to keep a supply of plants. Dry sprigs in small bundles for winter use.

Common Problems:
- Frost damage: Frost tender. Plant out after the last frosts and protect early in autumn.
- Rotting: Caused by wet, heavy soil. Improve drainage.
- Straggly growth: Caused by too little light or lack of pinching. Provide full sun and pinch tips regularly.
- Loss of flavour: Caused by rich soil or overwatering. Keep it lean.
- Pests: Check for aphids and spider mite, particularly on plants under cover.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
