❤️ Why you'll love it

Hazel is a low-maintenance, fast-growing native tree that not only supports wildlife but rewards you with delicious edible nuts from September to October. Its graceful, multi-stemmed shape makes it perfect for hedgerows or woodland edges, and it responds well to coppicing. The catkins provide early pollen for bees

How to look after your 40cm Hazel (Corylus avellana) in the UK

Position & Light:
Hazel grows well in sun or partial shade and is a very hardy, fast-growing native tree. Choose a sheltered spot where it has room to grow, as it develops into a large, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree. It suits hedges, woodland edges, wildlife gardens and orchards, and provides yellow catkins in late winter and edible cobnuts in autumn.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in any reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, including clay and chalk, although it does best in rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water regularly during the first two summers while the roots establish, soaking the root ball thoroughly rather than giving frequent light waterings. Mulch around the base with bark or compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Feeding:
Hazel needs little feeding. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring is usually enough. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which can reduce nut production.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Prune in late winter after catkins have shed pollen, removing dead or crossing stems. Hazel can be coppiced, which means cutting stems to near the ground every 7-10 years to provide fresh growth and poles. For nuts, plant two or more hazels nearby, as they need a different plant for cross-pollination. Squirrels often take the nuts before they are ripe, so harvest promptly or net the trees.

Common Problems:
- No nuts: Hazel needs cross-pollination from another hazel. Plant two or more.
- Squirrels: Often take the nuts. Harvest early or protect with netting.
- Poor establishment: Young trees need steady watering and weed control in the first two years.
- Suckers: Hazel produces stems from the base. Remove or use to create new plants.
- Pests: Check for nut weevil and aphids. Healthy trees usually cope well.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 40cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
