How to look after Spiral Rush (Juncus effusus Spiralis) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or partial shade. This fully hardy, evergreen rush has bright green, corkscrew-shaped stems that provide year-round structure. It is ideal for pond margins, bog gardens, damp borders and containers, where it makes a striking architectural feature. Full sun gives the tightest, most vivid curls.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in moist to wet soil, in shallow water at the edge of a pond, or in a container. Spiral rush will tolerate a standing water depth of up to about 5cm. Keep the soil consistently moist and never let pots dry out, particularly in summer. In a container, stand the pot in a tray of water in hot weather.

Feeding:
In pond margins no feeding is needed. For container plants, feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser or slow-release feed in spring to encourage growth.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Remove any stems that revert to plain green and straight growth, cutting them out at the base to keep the spiral effect. Trim off brown or damaged stems in early spring to allow fresh growth to emerge. Divide congested clumps in spring every few years, discarding the oldest centre. Container plants should be repotted every two to three years.

Common Problems:
- Brown stem tips: Caused by dry soil or hot sun. Keep the soil constantly moist.
- Straight stems: Natural reversion. Cut straight stems out at the base.
- Straggly or thin growth: Divide and repot, and feed lightly.
- Cold damage: Fully hardy, but pots can freeze solid in hard winters. Move containers to a sheltered position.
- Pests: Mostly trouble-free, though aphids may occasionally colonise new growth.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.

🪴 What Does Bare Root Mean?
