How to look after your 30cm Holly (Ilex aquifolium) in the UK
Position & Light:
Holly grows well in sun or shade, making it one of the most adaptable evergreens. A young 30cm plant will establish best in a sheltered spot with some protection from harsh winds. It suits hedges, woodland edges, mixed borders and wildlife gardens, and can be planted in large containers while it is young.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in any reasonably well-drained soil, including clay, chalk and acidic ground. Water regularly during the first two years, particularly in spring and summer, as young plants have small root systems. Soak the root ball deeply rather than giving frequent light waterings. Once established, holly is tough and drought tolerant. Mulch the base with bark or compost to retain moisture.
Feeding:
Give a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a mulch of well-rotted compost in spring. Holly is not a heavy feeder, but young plants benefit from a little extra support while establishing.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Holly needs little pruning when young, apart from removing damaged shoots. Trim hedges in late summer, and shape specimen plants in late spring. Wear gloves, as the leaves are sharp. Keep the area around the base free of weeds. Note that berries are only produced by female plants, and a male plant nearby is needed for pollination, so berrying cannot be guaranteed.
Common Problems:
- Leaf drop after planting: Usually caused by transplant shock or dry soil. Water well and mulch.
- Yellowing leaves: Often caused by waterlogging or nutrient deficiency. Improve drainage and feed in spring.
- No berries: Only female plants berry, and they need a male for pollination.
- Holly leaf miner: Pale blotches on leaves. Remove and destroy affected leaves.
- Scale insects and sooty mould: Can occur on stressed plants. Keep plants healthy and wash off with water.
