How to look after Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or partial shade. Selfheal, also known as heal-all, is a hardy, low-growing native perennial with dark green leaves and dense spikes of violet-blue flowers from midsummer to early autumn, which bees and butterflies love. It has a long history in folk herbalism. It suits wildlife gardens, wildflower meadows, lawns, path edges and the front of borders, and is tough enough to cope with mowing.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in moist, well-drained soil, including clay and chalk. Selfheal tolerates a wide range of soils, but does best in reasonably moist ground. Water regularly after planting and during prolonged dry spells. Once established, it is fairly tough.
Feeding:
No feeding is needed. It thrives in average soil, and rich soil encourages vigorous spreading.
Pruning & Maintenance:
It spreads by creeping stems and self-seeding to form low mats. Cut back after flowering to tidy plants and encourage fresh growth, or mow occasionally if grown in a lawn. Divide clumps in spring or autumn to make new plants and to keep spread under control. The young leaves can be added to salads in small amounts, but if you are unsure, seek advice before using any plant medicinally.
Common Problems:
- Spreading: Selfheal spreads freely. Remove unwanted growth and deadhead.
- Powdery mildew: Can occur in dry, shady spots. Water at the base and allow air circulation.
- Few flowers: Too much shade or frequent mowing. Allow it to flower between cuts.
- Leaf spot: Remove affected leaves.
- Slugs: May nibble young growth.
Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness.
Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
