How to look after Carnation Dwarf Vienna (Dianthus caryophyllus) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, open position. Carnations flower best with at least six hours of direct sun a day. They suit borders, rock gardens, raised beds, gravel gardens and containers, and thrive at the front of a border where the evergreen, blue-grey foliage can be enjoyed all year.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in very well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Add grit or sharp sand to heavy soils, or grow in raised beds or pots. Water regularly after planting until established, then only during prolonged dry spells. Carnations dislike wet feet, especially in winter, so avoid waterlogged ground and water at the base rather than over the foliage.

Feeding:
Carnations are not heavy feeders. Apply a balanced or high-potash liquid feed every two to three weeks while in flower, particularly for plants in pots. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which encourage soft leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and keep plants tidy. After the main flush of flowers, trim back flowered stems and any straggly growth to a healthy shoot. Plants can become woody and leggy after three or four years, so take cuttings in summer to keep a fresh supply of young plants. Taller stems may benefit from light support.

Common Problems:
- Yellowing or rotting at the base: Usually caused by wet, heavy soil. Improve drainage with grit or move to a raised bed or container.
- Few flowers: Too much shade or too much nitrogen feed. Move to a sunnier spot and use a high-potash feed.
- Woody, leggy plants: Natural with age. Trim after flowering and renew plants from cuttings every few years.
- Rust and fungal leaf spots: Remove affected foliage promptly, avoid overhead watering and give plants plenty of air circulation.
- Pests: Check for aphids and, in pots, vine weevil grubs. Remove aphids by hand or hose them off, and keep containers well maintained.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
