How to look after Rudbeckia Hirta (Autumn Shades) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun for the best and longest display of flowers. Rudbeckia will tolerate light shade but may become leggy and flower less freely. It suits sunny borders, prairie-style plantings, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and large containers. Plant the three plants in your pack about 30-40cm apart for a bold group effect.
Soil & Watering:
Grow in any reasonably fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Rudbeckia is quite drought tolerant once established, but water regularly after planting and during prolonged dry spells in summer for the best flowering. Avoid waterlogged soil, particularly over winter.
Feeding:
Rudbeckia needs very little feeding in average garden soil. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring is usually enough. Plants in pots can be given a balanced liquid feed every few weeks through the summer.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms from midsummer into autumn. Towards the end of the season, consider leaving some seedheads standing, as they provide food for birds and interest in the winter garden. Cut back old stems in late autumn or early spring. Rudbeckia hirta is often short-lived, so allow a few plants to self-seed or sow fresh seed to keep a regular supply.
Common Problems:
- Slugs and snails: Young plants and new spring growth are most at risk. Protect them with wildlife-friendly controls such as barriers or by hand picking.
- Powdery mildew: A white coating on leaves can appear in dry weather or crowded plantings. Water at the base, allow good air circulation and remove badly affected foliage.
- Few flowers: Usually too much shade or too much nitrogen. Move to a sunnier position and avoid heavy feeding.
- Short-lived plants: Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial or biennial. Allow plants to self-seed or replace every two to three years.
- Wilting in heat: Water thoroughly in prolonged dry weather, particularly plants in containers.
