How to look after Echinacea Red in Shades (Echinacea purpurea) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in an open position. This striking coneflower has daisy-like, purple-pink flowers with prominent, orange-brown, spiky centres from midsummer to autumn, loved by bees and butterflies, and the seed heads feed goldfinches in winter. It suits sunny borders, prairie-style plantings, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and large pots.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Echinacea tolerates most soils, including clay, but dislikes waterlogging, particularly in winter. Water regularly after planting and in prolonged dry spells in the first two years. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant. Mulch with compost in spring.

Feeding:
Echinacea needs little feeding. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring is usually enough. Rich soil encourages lots of leaves and floppy stems.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Deadhead faded flowers to encourage more blooms, but leave the seed heads from late summer for birds and winter structure. Cut back old stems in early spring as new growth appears. Divide congested clumps in spring every three to four years. Young plants are slow to establish, so be patient. Traditionally used in herbal teas, but if you are unsure, seek advice before using any plant medicinally.

Common Problems:
- Slugs and snails: Young plants and new spring shoots are vulnerable. Protect in spring.
- Rotting: Caused by wet, heavy soil, especially in winter. Improve drainage with grit.
- Few flowers: Too much shade or too much nitrogen. Choose a sunny spot and avoid heavy feeding.
- Powdery mildew: Can occur in dry conditions. Water at the base and allow air circulation.
- Short-lived plants: Echinacea can be short-lived in wet soils. Divide every few years and ensure good drainage.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
