How to look after African Daisy Tresco Purple (Osteospermum jucundum) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, sheltered position. The flowers open in sunshine and close in dull weather and at night. A mat-forming habit makes it ideal for the front of borders, rock gardens, gravel gardens, banks, walls and containers. This is one of the hardier osteospermums and often survives UK winters in mild areas and well-drained sites.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in light, well-drained soil. Add grit to heavier soils to prevent winter wet, which is more damaging than cold. Water regularly after planting and during dry spells, but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Plants in containers need more frequent watering in summer but should never sit in saucers of water.
Feeding:
Give a high-potash liquid feed, such as tomato feed, every two to three weeks through spring and summer to encourage plenty of flowers. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which result in lots of foliage but fewer blooms. Plants in the ground rarely need feeding in average soil.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Deadhead regularly to extend the flowering season, which can run from late spring right through to the first frosts. Trim back leggy stems in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed to encourage fresh, bushy growth. In colder areas, protect plants with a dry mulch or horticultural fleece in winter, or grow in pots and move under cover. Take softwood cuttings in late summer as insurance against winter losses.
Common Problems:
- Flowers not opening: Normal in cloudy weather or shade. Plants need sun to flower at their best.
- Winter losses: Usually caused by wet, cold soil. Improve drainage, shelter from the worst weather and take cuttings in late summer.
- Leggy growth: Caused by too little light or lack of trimming. Move to a sunnier spot and cut back in spring.
- Few flowers: Often due to too much nitrogen or lack of deadheading. Use a high-potash feed and remove spent blooms.
- Pests: Check for aphids on new growth and slugs on young plants. Remove aphids by hand or with a jet of water.
