🌿 Details
How to look after Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or light shade. This dramatic native biennial has spiny, architectural flower heads that attract bees and butterflies in summer, followed by seed heads that goldfinches love in autumn and winter. It suits wildlife gardens, meadows, cottage-style borders and the back of borders.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Teasel tolerates clay, chalk and poor soils. Water regularly after planting and during prolonged dry spells in the first year. Once established, it copes well with normal rainfall.
Feeding:
No feeding is needed. Teasel thrives in poor to average soil, and rich soil produces weak, floppy stems.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Teasel is a biennial, forming a low rosette of prickly leaves in its first year, then sending up tall, spiny flower stems in the second year before setting seed and dying. Leave the seed heads standing over winter for birds and winter structure. It self-seeds readily, so allow some seedlings to grow on to maintain a supply, and remove the rest. Wear gloves when handling the spiny stems.
Common Problems:
- No flowers in the first year: Normal. Teasel flowers in its second year.
- Spreading: It self-seeds freely. Remove unwanted seedlings or cut off seed heads before they ripen.
- Floppy stems: Caused by rich soil or shade. Choose a sunny spot and avoid feeding.
- Powdery mildew: Can affect leaves in dry conditions. Water at the base and allow air circulation.
- Slugs: Young rosettes may be nibbled in spring.
