How to look after Lagerstroemia (Crape Myrtle) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, sheltered, south-facing position, such as against a sunny wall. This showy small tree or large shrub produces crepe-textured blooms in late summer and autumn, followed by good autumn colour, and has attractive peeling bark. It needs a hot, sunny summer to flower well, so choose the warmest spot in your garden. It also grows well in large containers.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. Water regularly in the first two years while the roots establish, and keep container plants well watered through summer. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant. Mulch around the base with bark or compost in spring and autumn, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk.
Feeding:
Feed with a balanced or high-potash fertiliser in spring, and a mulch of well-rotted compost. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which encourages leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead, damaged and crossing branches, and shorten the previous year's growth to encourage flowers on new wood. Leaves appear late in spring, so do not assume the plant is dead. In colder areas, protect the roots with a thick mulch and young plants with fleece in winter, or move containers to a frost-free place.
Common Problems:
- Few flowers: Caused by too little sun, a cool summer or too much nitrogen. Choose the sunniest spot.
- Frost damage: Protect young plants in winter. Cut back damaged growth in spring.
- Powdery mildew: Common in humid, shady conditions. Allow air circulation and plant in full sun.
- Late leafing: Normal. Leaves appear in late spring.
- Aphids and sooty mould: Rinse off aphids and wipe off mould.
