How to look after Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in partial or full shade. This early-flowering woodland perennial has distinctive silver-spotted leaves and pink flowers that turn blue as they age, from late winter to spring, providing early nectar for bees. It suits shady borders, woodland gardens, under trees and shrubs and as ground cover.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Lungwort tolerates most soils, including clay, but dislikes drying out in summer. Water regularly in dry spells, particularly in the first year. Mulch with leaf mould or compost to retain moisture.

Feeding:
Lungwort needs little feeding. A mulch of leaf mould or well-rotted compost in spring is usually enough.

Pruning & Maintenance:
After flowering, cut back old, tatty foliage close to the ground to encourage a fresh flush of new, clean, attractive leaves. Water well after cutting. Divide clumps after flowering or in autumn every three to four years to maintain vigour and to make new plants. Remove faded flower stems if you do not want self-seeding.

Common Problems:
- Powdery mildew: Common in dry soil and hot summers. Keep moist, cut back affected leaves and mulch.
- Leaf scorch: Caused by too much sun or dry soil. Provide shade and water.
- Slugs and snails: May nibble young leaves.
- Few flowers: Too much deep shade or overcrowding. Provide dappled light and divide clumps.
- Silver spots fading: Natural in some plants and in hot weather.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
