❤️ Why you'll love it
A beautiful, fast-growing evergreen tree, Mountain Gum is prized for its smooth bark, attractive silvery-green foliage and graceful form. Native to south-eastern Australia, it makes an impressive feature tree, bringing year-round structure and a touch of woodland character to larger gardens. Its aromatic leaves release the distinctive fresh scent of eucalyptus when crushed, while its flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects. Best suited to spacious gardens, it is a hardy and adaptable choice for those looking to grow an unusual and striking tree.

How to look after Mountain Gum (Eucalyptus dalrympleana) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position, away from buildings, drains and overhead wires. Mountain gum is a fast-growing, hardy evergreen tree with attractive peeling bark in cream, grey and pink tones, and aromatic, silvery-green foliage. It is among the hardiest eucalyptus species for the UK and suits large gardens, shelterbelts and woodland plantings.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. It tolerates a wide range of soils but dislikes waterlogging. Water regularly during the first two summers while the roots establish, particularly in dry spells. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant.
Feeding:
In most soils no feeding is needed. A balanced slow-release feed in spring can help young trees settle in. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that cause soft growth vulnerable to frost.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Stake young trees in exposed gardens for the first two years, as fast top growth can lead to wind rock. Little pruning is needed apart from removing damaged branches. To keep it smaller and encourage rounded juvenile foliage, cut back hard in spring every year or two (coppicing). In the first winters, protect young plants with a mulch around the roots and fleece in severe frosts.
Common Problems:
- Frost damage on young plants: Protect with fleece and mulch in the first winters.
- Wind rock: Fast growth can leave young trees unstable. Stake and plant small.
- Leaf browning or drop: Caused by waterlogging, drought or cold winds. Keep moist and shelter from wind.
- Peeling bark: Natural and attractive. No treatment needed.
- Large size: Mature trees become very tall. Position away from buildings and coppice if needed.
