How to look after Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in a sunny, sheltered position, with the roots in cool shade. This valuable evergreen clematis flowers through the winter months, producing creamy, bell-shaped flowers with delicate speckling, followed by silky seed heads. It suits walls, fences, trellis and pergolas, and is a winter treat for early pollinators. Shelter from cold winds helps to protect the flowers and foliage.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline. Plant with the crown a few centimetres below soil level, and keep the roots cool with a mulch or low plants. Water regularly in the first two years, and keep container plants well watered, as this clematis dislikes drought in summer, which is when it forms its flower buds. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Feeding:
Feed with a balanced or high-potash fertiliser in spring, and mulch with well-rotted compost. Container plants benefit from a liquid feed every few weeks in spring and summer.

Pruning & Maintenance:
This clematis belongs to pruning group 1. It needs little pruning, apart from removing dead or damaged stems and trimming back overgrown growth immediately after flowering in early spring. Avoid pruning later, as you will remove the next winter's flower buds. Tie in new shoots to supports as they grow. It dislikes summer drought, which can cause leaves to drop in dry weather, although they regrow in autumn.

Common Problems:
- Summer leaf drop: Natural in hot, dry weather. Keep the roots moist and mulched, and growth returns in autumn.
- Frost damage to flowers: Plant in a sheltered spot, and protect in severe cold with fleece.
- Clematis wilt: Sudden wilting of stems. Cut back affected stems to healthy growth, and plants usually recover.
- Few flowers: Pruned at the wrong time or too much shade. Prune only after flowering.
- Slugs and snails: May damage young shoots.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 40cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
