How to look after Anemone coronaria Royale in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or light shade in a sheltered position. This jewel-bright poppy anemone has bold, saucer-shaped flowers in rich shades, and is superb as a cut flower and in borders, pots and cutting gardens. It flowers from spring to early summer. It is not fully hardy, so shelter from cold winds and protect from hard frost.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, very well-drained soil or in pots of gritty compost. Poppy anemones dislike heavy, wet soil, especially in winter. Water regularly while growing and flowering, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged, then allow it to dry out when the foliage dies back.

Feeding:
Feed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser, such as tomato feed, every two weeks during growth and flowering to encourage plenty of blooms.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Pick flowers regularly for the vase, as this encourages more blooms. Deadhead faded flowers to tidy plants. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, as this feeds the roots for next year. In cold or wet areas, protect plants in winter with a dry mulch or grow in pots in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Divide clumps after the foliage dies back every few years.

Common Problems:
- Rotting: Caused by wet, heavy soil in winter. Improve drainage and grow in pots if necessary.
- Frost damage: Not fully hardy. Mulch or provide shelter in cold areas.
- Few flowers: Too much shade or lack of feeding. Plant in a sunny spot and feed with potash.
- Powdery mildew: Can occur in dry, crowded conditions. Allow air circulation and water at the base.
- Slugs and snails: Young shoots are vulnerable in spring.
