How to look after Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position. Goji is a vigorous, hardy, drought-tolerant shrub with arching stems, small purple flowers in summer and bright red, edible berries in late summer and autumn. It suits sunny borders, fruit gardens, hedging and large containers, and tolerates wind and coastal conditions well.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in well-drained soil of almost any type, including poor and dry ground. Goji dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil. Water regularly in the first year to establish the roots, then only in prolonged dry spells. Mulch with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Feeding:
Goji needs little feeding. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring is usually enough. Too much nitrogen encourages leaves at the expense of fruit.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Support the long, arching stems with a trellis, wires or canes. In late winter or early spring, remove dead, damaged and crossing stems, and cut back long side shoots to encourage fruiting wood. Plants usually fruit from the second or third year. Remove suckers if you want to restrict spread. Pick ripe berries gently as they colour, as they soften quickly.
Common Problems:
- No fruit: Normal on young plants, and caused by shade or over-feeding. Choose a sunny position and avoid feeding with nitrogen.
- Spreading suckers: Goji can spread by suckers. Remove unwanted shoots or contain with a root barrier.
- Rotting roots: Caused by waterlogged soil. Improve drainage.
- Wind damage: Stems can break in strong winds. Provide support.
- Pests: Mostly trouble-free, though aphids may appear on new growth.
Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness.
Plant height: approximately 40cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
