How to look after Silverbush (Convolvulus cneorum) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, sheltered position, such as a south-facing border, gravel garden, raised bed, sunny wall or large container. This compact Mediterranean evergreen shrub has silky, silver foliage and white, pink-tinged flowers from late spring to summer. It is borderline hardy in the UK, so shelter from cold winds and the worst winter weather is beneficial.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in very well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. Add plenty of grit to heavy soils or plant on a slope or raised bed. Water well during the first season to establish a good root system, then only during extended dry spells. Plants in pots need regular watering in summer but must never be waterlogged. Winter wet is far more damaging than cold.

Feeding:
Silverbush needs little feeding. Too much fertiliser produces soft growth that is more prone to frost damage and spoils the compact habit. Plants in containers can be given a low-nitrogen liquid feed once or twice during the growing season.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, rounded shape. Remove any frost-damaged or dead shoots in mid-spring once new growth begins. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not regrow. In colder areas, protect plants in severe weather with horticultural fleece, or grow in pots and move to a bright, frost-free place for winter. Take softwood cuttings in summer as insurance.

Common Problems:
- Dieback after winter: Usually caused by cold, wet soil or frost. Cut back damaged growth in spring and improve drainage.
- Leaf yellowing or rot: Overwatering or poor drainage. Allow soil to dry out between waterings.
- Leggy growth: Too much shade or lack of trimming. Move to full sun and prune lightly after flowering.
- Few flowers: Usually too little sun or too much fertiliser. Choose the sunniest spot and avoid feeding heavily.
- Pests: Generally trouble-free, though aphids may occasionally appear on new growth.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
